Keep Your Family Safe When Boating

Georgia can be a boater's paradise, but as personal injury attorneys in Atlanta, we deal with our fair share of boating accidents that result in injuries.

With the summer season in full swing, it's important to remember to keep your family and all your boat passengers safe.

Georgia enforcement officers patrol our waterways and lakes to help keep boaters safe. Every passenger in your boat must have access to a personal flotation device, and passengers under the age of 13 must have one on at all times.

Drinking and boating don't mix. Driving a boat while intoxicated is as dangerous as driving a car after drinking, and water has many hidden hazards that you can't always see, so don't drink and drive when boating.

Sunscreen may seem like a minor issue, but sunburns can be serious, so apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply after swimming or according to directions on the product, usually every hour.

Watch out for other boaters, and if you're going to be on the water after dark, be sure your boat is equipped with the proper lights. A working horn, an anchor, and an on-board fire extinguisher are other types of equipment you need to ensure your boat is equipped for emergencies.

If you or someone you care about is injured in a boating accident, call the law offices of Van Sant Law, LLC.
