Van Smashes into House

With all the tornadoes tearing through Georgia, most residents have been watching the skies for potential threats to their house.  Apparently that focus should be a little lower down.

On May 3, 2011, a van collided with a building near Hampton.  According the driver, the driving accident was a result of her brakes not working correctly.  The claim is being investigated.  The driver has been charged with driving with a suspended license, as well as seat belt violations. 

Although there were two children in the van not wearing seatbelts, thankfully the only suffered minor injuries.  The house, on the other hand, was not so lucky.  The side of the house looks like a home renovation gone totally awry-all because a van's brakes failed.

How often do you get your own vehicle's brakes checked?  Brakes are extremely important for safe driving.  If you can't brake, you can't drive safe.  A good rule of thumb is to have your brakes inspected twice a year. 

Here are the top three signs that your breaks need replacing now:

• Takes longer to stop than normal
• Brake pedal travels down farther than normal
• High-pitch screeching noise when brake used (This does NOT always occur.)
