When Injuries Turn Fatal

Injuries that arise from car accidents can range from acute to deadly.  We've all had moments where we space out and lose focus temporarily while we are driving.  Unfortunately, that momentary lack of focus can not only cost you a lot of money in legal fees and damages, it can also cost someone their life.  Just ask the parents of Chassity Hollaman.

On April 22, 2011, Chassity died of injuries sustained by an accident with Alberto Jose Abreus.  Following her death, Abreus was charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree.  In Georgia, what that equates to is a misdemeanor.

Chassity's parents would like to see his charge changed.  On Channel 2 News, Tammie Hollaman, Chassity's mother, said, "They took my child, my 20-year-old child, out of my arms.  They put her in the ground.  That's not a misdemeanor."

Yet, in the state of Georgia, it is.  Unless the fatal accident was caused by drunk driving, speeding, or running from the police, the perpetrator cannot be charged with a felony vehicular homicide.  According to Cobb County's District Attorney, those were not the facts in this case.

While it's easy to take for granted just how dangerous your vehicle can be, it is important to always drive with the utmost care and focus.  Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
